In the book of Matthew chapter 9, and also in the book of Mark chapter 5, verses 24-34, Scripture records the encounter of a woman with a special need who searches out Jesus simply to touch Him having the faith that a simple touch will heal her body.
Mark 5:24-34
24 So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.
25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years,
26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.
27 When she heard about Jesus, she cam behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.
28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”
29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”
31 But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”
32 And He looked around to see her who had done this thing.
33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
34 And He said to her, “Daughter , your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
We see this woman had been to see many doctors and she had spent all of her money trying to get relief from her illness, but there had been no relief for over 12 years. The doctors couldn’t help her, the money she used couldn’t help her, and time couldn’t help her.
I hear people say, “Time heals all wounds”. However, I disagree; I don’t believe time heals anything. God can heal a broken heart, God can heal the pain of losing a loved one, God can heal the damage caused by abuse and neglect, God can heal your body from illness, but time doesn’t heal a thing.
God can use time as a tool to heal, but I have seen too many situations where people are still carrying around pain from past relationships. Too many times I have seen people who can‘t let go of bitterness, anger and hatred from relationships no matter how long ago the initial pain had begun. I hear people relive situations that may be 10, 15 or even 20 years old, as if they had happened yesterday.
However, people that have a genuine fellowship with Jesus Christ have an ability to move forward with time. Not because time has healed their wound, but because they have experienced God’s healing through time spent with the Him. There is a special touch that you receive when you genuinely experience God forgiveness. What can get you from the stage of anger and bitterness to a stage of peace and love? It is being able to see yourself as undeserving of God’s love and yet, Him giving it to you anyway.
Jesus said to the woman, “your faith has made you well.” It is our faith in Jesus to be the great healer that will make us well. He has healed us of our terrible sinful state and He will heal our pain. You can’t be healed by a pastor; you can’t be healed by self-help books, the only healing that works is the healing that comes from a faith that grows through a true fellowship with Jesus.
Doctors are gifted with special tools of God to help us through the illnesses and pains caused from our bodies deteriorating through time. But when it comes to the pain and suffering of the heart and soul Jesus is our only answer.
The people in our churches need a special touch from Jesus today. More and more people want to turn to drugs, alcohol, sex, or materialism to heal their deep seeded pain instead of searching out the only true cure that comes from Jesus. The devil is more than happy to provide the way to stunt our spiritual growth and keep us from reaching out to God.
Let your faith in Jesus make you well.
